Klubfest Byron Bay 2004

The Byron Bay Chapter of Klub VW held their first ever show over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of October.  Whilst they had a great idea for their show, unfortunatly they picked the same weekend as both the Federal Election and the Bathurst 1000 races (a legendary weekend of car racing here in Australia), so the number of attendees was down compared to what I expected to see.

The weekend actually started on Friday night, where many of the participants gathered at the Belongil Fields camping grounds at Byron Bay and set up camp.  On Saturday, the shows attendees participated in a convoy style cruise to a nearby town (sorry I'm a little vague here, but I only attended the show on Sunday due to work committments.).  After the cruise, everyone took in the sights and experiences that Byron Bay has to offer before returning to the camp ground for more catching up and a few (too many!) drinks.  The antics carried on late into the night.

Sunday arrived and I found myself having a bit of a sleep-in (a nice change for a VW event Sunday!), before jumping into my '63 bug and heading towards Byron Bay.  A cruise of other VW people that couldn't make it down to Byron for the Saturday had already left (too early for me!).  The 1.5 hour drive was enjoyable and uneventful.

Upon arriving, we were presented with a good selection of vehicles, ranging from the usual suspects, to some new "just completed" vehicles, along with a small selection of trade and swap meet stands.  I spent the day wandering around the site catching up with people and voting for our favourite cars.

Just after lunch the trophy presentation was held, and a number of our club members walked away with trophies - the Gold Coast Dub Club members made a clean sweep of the type III catagories!  Well done!  Unfortunatly, I was not aware that they were judging a 'Dog of the Day' catagory, so I didn't enter my car...oh well, I s'pose its about time I gave someone else a chance!

A group of our club members decided that we would go into town and have lunch after the show, but first we would visit the Byron Lighthouse.  Finding a carpark anywhere in Byron on a weekend is almost impossible these days, but eventually we managed to achieve what we set out to do and ended up having fish and ships on the rocks overlooking the beach.  Tim and Dave discovered a novel way of feeding the local seaguls... see the pics below.
